- 32° in Hainesville on January 21, 1994 and Layton on January 14, 1912

Warmest Temperature: 71° January 26, 1950

SUSSEX COUNTY WEATHER RECORDS
TEMPERATURE
Lowest:  -32°F Hainesville January 21, 1994
(Some lower elevations in Layton the morning of January 21, 1994 reported -35° and -36° unofficially.  However, temperature studies conducted by myself concluded that on a clear, calm windless night with deep snow cover as in this case, the temperature along Old Mine Road in Layton at the De Pue Home where official government weather records were kept for 46 years by Alonzo DePue was averaging 2°-3° colder then my location in Hainesville where the -32° was recorded)

Earliest Freeze: August 25, 1940  32°  (Layton)
Latest Freeze:  June 22, 1940  32°  (Layton)

Highest: 106°F Sussex July 11, 1936 
(State record is 110°F at Runyon on July 10, 1936)

PRECIPITATION
Greatest in 24 hours: *14.21" at Sparta Mountain on August 12, 2000
(State record is *18.65" at Jefferson (Morris County) August 12, 2000
*Though measurements recorded with unofficial equipment and observers, radar confirmed ground reports. Both locations were visited and inspected by myself.

Greatest in one month: 17.30" in Sussex August 1955
(State record is 25.98" at Paterson 1882)

Greatest in one year: Sussex 63.71" 1972
(State record is 85.99" at Paterson 1882)

SNOWFALL
Greatest in 24 hours: 30" in Sussex January 26, 1905
(State record as well)
Greatest storms: 34" Cape May February 11-14, 1899 
(Official state record as well)

30" Sussex January 26, 1905
30" Mountain Creek (unofficial) Dec. 30-31, 2000
28" Canistear Reservoir January 7-8, 1996
27" Newton January 7-8, 1996
Maximum depth of snow on ground at any one time: 50" 
Canistear Reservoir and Layton February 4-5, 1961 (State Record)

Most snowfall in one month: 49.5" Sussex January 1987 
(State record is 50.1" at Freehold December 1880)

Most snowfall in one winter season: 
122.0" High Point State Park 1995-96
108.1" Culvers Lake 1915-16
107.0" Wantage 1995-96
106.0" Vernon (Highland Lakes) 1995-96
